Neurological movement disorder (dystonia)

Dystonia is an organic neurological movement disorder. The characteristic features are involuntary muscle spasms.

Forms of Dystonia

Spasmodic torticollis: permanent abnormal position of the head, i.e. tipping or tilting forwards, backwards or to the side

Eyelid spasm (blepharospasm): increased blinking and spasmodic tight shutting of the eyes or even functional blindness.

Writer’s and musician’s cramp: the hand fails in its function when writing, playing a musical instrument or other fine-motor activities, e.g. when playing tennis or golf.

Vocal cord spasm (spasmodic dysphonia) occurs while speaking and makes the voice sound strained or hoarse.

Spasm of the mouth, tongue and pharynx (oromandibular dystonia) causes twitching of the lips, tongue and lower jaw and prevents speaking and eating.
