The cause of blepharospasm is not known. It is known that the disease has its origins in a disturbance of the interaction between various chemical substances in a particular region of the brain (the basal ganglia), but no details are known. Although it is an organic disease, it is dependent on and influenced by numerous external circumstances or by the patient’s mental state. Patients regularly report that they have more severe symptoms when they are stressed and have problems. Patients are usually symptom-free when lying down or sleeping. Some patients have fewer symptoms or no symptoms at all during specific activities such as ironing. There are often no symptoms during unusual activities (such as walking backwards, peeling an apple behind one’s back). Symptoms are also usually less severe when on holiday.
