Diagnosis

For diagnostic purposes, all patients should undergo a thorough neurological examination, including those at the beginning of the disease. In 5% of patients, the writer’s cramp symptoms are caused by another disease of the brain (secondary writer’s cramp). On the other hand there are diseases the symptoms of which (pain, cramp) are reminiscent of and may be confused with writer’s cramp. Examples are tennis elbow (epicondylitis) and carpal tunnel syndrome.
