Therapy

The introduction of Botulinum toxin for the treatment of focal dystonia opened up new treatment options for patients with writer’s cramp. There are also various non-medication measures which can likewise provide relief (such as changing the way the pen is held, using thicker pens and training to use the other hand).

Being unable to read or write is considered a disgrace. A person affected by writer’s cramp rightly fears that those around him at work or even complete strangers in the bank or at the post office will react to his writing problems with incomprehension and rejection. An awareness of the misunderstandings surrounding writer’s cramp (is he illiterate?) increases the stress experienced by the person in question and sets off a vicious circle in which it adversely affects his ability to write and thus also his self-confidence. Every form of focal dystonia is intensified by stress and agitation. For this reason it helps if the sufferer is completely upfront about his condition and tells those around him. At the same time, self-help groups can make a major contribution, since fear of adverse reactions is unnecessary among fellow sufferers, who can also give helpful tips about everyday life.
