Spasmodic torticollis is frequently portrayed as a mental illness; this happens as a result of ignorance, even though more recent medical studies show that it is demonstrably an organic disease. The crucial point for the diagnosis of spasmodic torticollis is the identification of typical patterns of movement. Additional neurological symptoms such as paralysis, uncoordinated movements, and disorders of attention and memory point to a different disease. Spasmodic torticollis is a secondary symptom of another disease in only about five per cent of those affected.
